Warm Sautéed Olives

Warm Sautéed Olives - Treat Indulgently

Picture a warm evening with friends gathered around a table, the clinking of glasses blending with laughter. In the center, a small bowl of vibrant, warm sautéed olives beckons. This dish isn’t just an appetizer; it tells a story—a tale of simple ingredients transformed into something extraordinary.
As a registered dietitian and food blogger, my adventures in the kitchen have led me to discover that even the humblest ingredients can shine with a little attention and love.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup premium extra virgin olive oil – Choose high-quality oil to enrich the dish.
  • 1 1/2 cups of mixed olives – Castelvetrano and Manzanilla are my personal favorites.
  • 2 teaspoons finely minced fresh rosemary – This brings a fragrant aroma.
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest – Adds brightness without overwhelming.
  • 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice – For a fresh, zesty punch.
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red chili flakes – This introduces a subtle warmth.
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme – An earthy note enhances the dish.
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper – Essential seasonings.
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced – For a hit of aromatic goodness.

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
  1. Start by gathering all your ingredients. Mince the garlic, finely chop the fresh herbs, and zest the lemon. Having everything ready will help the cooking process flow smoothly.
Step 2: Heat the Olive Oil
  1. In a medium skillet, heat the ¼ cup of premium extra virgin olive oil over medium heat. Don’t rush this step; warm oil allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
Step 3: Sauté the Garlic
  1. Once the oil shimmers, add the minced garlic. Sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Be careful not to let it brown to avoid bitterness.
Step 4: Add the Olives
  1. Introduce the mixed olives to the skillet. Toss them in the oil and garlic mixture, allowing each olive to soak in the flavorful essence. Stir often to prevent sticking.
Step 5: Incorporate Herbs and Lemon
  1. After about 2-3 minutes, sprinkle in the minced rosemary and thyme. Add the lemon zest and juice as well. Mix everything thoroughly, letting the olives absorb the herbal notes.
Step 6: Season and Add Spice
  1. Next, sprinkle in the crushed red chili flakes, sea salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. You'll want just the right balance of heat and salt.
Step 7: Serve Warm
  1. Now, it's time to enjoy your creation! Transfer the olives to a serving bowl. Drizzle with a bit more olive oil if you like and serve them warm. Pair with your favorite bread for dipping.

Notes

  • Choose Quality Olives: Not all olives are created equal. Invest in high-quality olives for the best flavor.
  • Experiment with Herbs: While rosemary is fantastic, you can introduce other herbs like oregano or basil for a different twist.
  • Control Spice Level: If you're not keen on heat, start with a smaller amount of chili flakes and increase as desired.
  • Let Ingredients Introduce Themselves: Sauté each component gently to highlight their unique flavors.
  • Serve Immediately: For the best experience, enjoy the olives right after cooking. They are tastiest warm.
